Toise toise
About the Toise
The toise of Paris was six royal feet, about 1.949 metres, and was the principal length standard of pre-revolutionary France. The surveyors Delambre and Méchain measured the meridian arc in toises during the 1790s survey that defined the original metre. It was abolished with the move to the metric system.
