Imperial gallon gal
About the Imperial gallon
The imperial gallon was created by the Weights and Measures Act 1824 as the volume of ten pounds of distilled water under set conditions. The Weights and Measures Act 1985 fixed it at exactly 4.54609 litres. It is about 20 per cent larger than the US gallon, which is why fuel economy figures in miles per gallon differ between the UK and US.
