About the Knot
A knot is one nautical mile per hour, about 0.5144 metres per second or 1.151 miles per hour. Ships and aircraft report speed in knots. The name comes from the log line, a rope with evenly spaced knots that sailors paid out behind the ship and counted against a sandglass.
