Roman foot pes
About the Roman foot
The Roman foot, or pes, was about 29.6 centimetres, a little shorter than the modern English foot. It was divided into 12 unciae, the origin of the word inch, or 16 digits. Surviving measuring rods and buildings allow it to be estimated, and the exact value varied slightly by place and period.
