Roman mile mille passuum
About the Roman mile
The Roman mile was a thousand double paces, mille passus, or 5000 Roman feet, about 1.48 kilometres. Milestones along Roman roads recorded distances in these miles. The English statute mile kept the name but was lengthened to 5280 feet in 1593.
